Letter from Ian 21st November
Dear St Columba's Family,
I wonder how many of you have watched any episodes of the new series of "The Crown" on Netflix this week? We managed to watch all three previous series during the first lockdown! The reason I mention this is because of the theme of this Sunday's service, Christ the King, and something I read during the week about a Tearfund supporting lady in Scotland who died earlier this year, six weeks before her 100th birthday. One of her friends commented: "why worry about a card from the Queen when you've gone to see the king!"
This is our great hope, that this life is not all there is, but there is a wonderful new life awaiting us, life with King Jesus in heaven. These thoughts are, I hope, especially comforting as we remember Christine, who died 12 days before her 69th birthday (which would have been on Friday) and who we will remember on Friday with her funeral in church. Sadly once again this is limited to 30 invited guests (Christine made life easier in this respect by saying who the 30 should be!) but there will be a live stream of the service from church. All you need do is log on to one of the links below just before 2pm on Friday 27th November, and you will be able to watch everything from church, although, because of copyright restrictions, all the music in the service will be muted so you won't be able to hear that.
LINKS FOR CHRISTINE'S FUNERAL
GIVING TO ST COLUMBA'S
Once again can I thank everyone who has kindly given to the church during these past months. All those people who were part of the Stewardship scheme giving by Standing Order will have received a letter from our Treasurer, James Ireland, about changing to the new PARISH GIVING SCHEME with direct debits. If you have not already returned the forms to James please do so asap. If anyone else would like to start giving directly, so that you can give just as easily in lockdown, please let James or me know and we will send you the paperwork.
It occurred to me that this Saturday would have been our Christmas Fayre, when as well as welcoming in many people from the wider community I know many of you give generously, either by buying cake ingredients, tombola prizes, etc or simply spending money at the Fayre. If anyone would like to make a donation in place of spending at or on the Fayre this can be done either by leaving an envelope at the Vicarage or making a bank transfer to:
HSBC Corby, sort code: 40-18-12
St Columba's PCC, account no. 31372947
and marking your donation "Fayre".
The TRAIDCRAFT STALL is always a central feature of the Fayre and is still available. If anyone would like to buy an ADVENT CALENDAR or to make an order from the catalogue (several people took them away after the Stall was open on 1st November) please let Miriam or me know. You can always look at their range online at www.traidcraftshop.co.uk but still order through Miriam to save P&P costs.
DEREK & JANE WALLER'S FAREWELL SERVICE
It was good to see our CMS mission partners last Sunday and we mentioned their Farewell Service so I am please to pass on the following invitation:
Church Mission Society warmly invite you to a free Event of Thanksgiving to celebrate the service of Derek and Jane Waller on Thursday 10th December 2020 at 4:30pm.
Come along to hear from Derek and Jane as they talk about their time as Mission Partners and their plans for the future. Gather together with link churches, fellow supporters and CMS family to ask questions and pray for Derek and Jane and their next steps. It will be a wonderful, unique opportunity to spend time together in fellowship with all of those who have been following Derek and Jane on their journey.
Join us from the comfort of your own home and give thanks for God’s provision and blessing on Derek and Jane’s journey. We would love to see you there.
Book a place at this FREE online event by going to: Derek and Jane's Event of Thanksgiving Tickets, Thu 10 Dec 2020 at 16:30 | Eventbrite
Please note that my technical challenges continue, following email problems I now don't have a mobile - so if you have tried texting or phoning my mobile on Friday or today, or if you need to contact me please use either EMAIL (I can always receive messages at firstname.lastname@example.org) or LANDLINE (01536 400225).
And next week look out for some fun family activities for Advent from OPEN DOORS, one of the good causes that St Columba's support.
God bless you all,
